Tiered discounts on Shopify: “spend more, save more” without discount codes

By the Scalix Ecom team · · 2 min read

Tiered discounts — “spend more, save more” — reward shoppers for every step up in order value instead of a single goal. They work especially well for stores where people buy several items at once: beauty, supplements, food, apparel basics.

How tiered discounts work

A tiered discount sets several goals, each with a bigger reward:

Cart total Reward
$50 10% off
$100 15% off
$150 20% off

The shopper gets the highest tier they reach. The progress bar shows the next step: “Add $22 more to get 15% off.” Each tier gives the shopper a new goal as soon as they reach the last one.

Value tiers vs. quantity tiers

  • Cart value (“spend $100”) suits stores with mixed prices.
  • Item count (“buy 3”) suits stores with similar prices, like socks, candles or snacks. It’s easy to understand and encourages multi-packs.

What Shopify does on its own

You can create several automatic discounts in Shopify with different minimum amounts. But you have to manage them separately, set how they combine, and none of them tell the shopper that a better tier is close. The shopper only sees the result at checkout — too late to add another item.

Mix rewards in one ladder

Tiers don’t all have to be percentage discounts. Mixing reward types often works better than three discounts in a row:

  1. $40 — free shipping
  2. $70 — 10% off
  3. $100 — a free gift

Kai supports free shipping, free gifts, percentage and fixed-amount discounts, and Buy X Get Y as tier rewards.

Set up tiered discounts with Kai

  1. Create a campaign in Kai and choose a value or quantity goal.
  2. Add tiers with their thresholds and rewards.
  3. Include or exclude products and collections — for example, keep sale items out.
  4. Write messages for each step, with the remaining amount filled in.
  5. Pick a layout: timeline bar, checklist, reward cards or progress ring. Each tier can have its own icon.
  6. Publish. Rewards apply at checkout as Shopify automatic discounts, with no codes.

You can run unlimited campaigns on every plan, schedule them, and set different goals per Shopify Market.

Choosing your tiers

  • Space tiers evenly in steps the shopper can reach with one more item.
  • Start the first tier near your average order value so many shoppers see progress straight away.
  • Make the top tier aspirational but real. If nobody ever reaches it, lower it.
  • Watch the margin. A 20% tier on low-margin products can cost more than it earns. Excluding some collections helps.

Frequently asked questions

Can I create tiered discounts in Shopify without an app?

You can create several automatic discounts with different minimums, but Shopify doesn't show shoppers the next tier, and combining several discounts needs careful setup. An app manages the tiers as one campaign and shows progress.

If a cart reaches several tiers, which discount applies?

In Kai, the highest tier reached. A cart that reaches the 20% tier gets 20% off, not 10% + 15% + 20%.

Can tiers be based on quantity instead of price?

Yes. Kai goals can be based on cart value or on the number of items — for example, buy 2 save 10%, buy 3 save 15%.

Can a tier be something other than a discount?

Yes. Each tier can be free shipping, a free gift, a percentage or fixed discount, or Buy X Get Y, so you can build a ladder like free shipping, then 10% off, then a gift.
