How to add a free shipping progress bar to Shopify (and pick the right threshold)
Free shipping is one of the strongest reasons shoppers give for adding one more item to a cart. But a rule hidden in your shipping settings does nothing if nobody knows about it. A free shipping progress bar turns the rule into a goal shoppers can see: “You’re $12 away from free shipping.”
This guide covers how the bar works on Shopify, how to choose a threshold, and how to set one up.
What a free shipping progress bar does
A free shipping bar sits in the cart (and often on product pages or across the top of the site). It reads the cart total and shows three states:
- Before the goal — how much is left: “Add $12 more for free shipping.”
- Goal reached — a confirmation: “You’ve unlocked free shipping!”
- At checkout — the shipping discount is applied automatically.
The third step is where many setups break. If the bar says “free shipping” but the shopper still has to type a code, some will drop off. The bar and the discount should be one system.
Shopify’s built-in options vs. an app
Shopify lets you create a free shipping discount with a minimum purchase amount under Discounts. That handles the reward, but not the message: Shopify doesn’t show a progress bar, and the shopper only learns about it at checkout (or from a banner you remember to update).
You have three ways to add the bar:
| Option | Shows progress | Applies discount | Effort |
|---|---|---|---|
| Theme code edit | Yes, if you build it | No — set up separately | Developer time; breaks on theme updates |
| Announcement bar text | No — static text | No | Low, but not dynamic |
| Progress bar app | Yes, live | Yes, if it creates the discount | Minutes |
When you pick an app, check that it creates the discount for you (ideally with Shopify Functions, Shopify’s current way of running discounts) so the bar and the checkout always agree.
How to choose your free shipping threshold
The threshold has to be high enough to raise the order value and low enough that shoppers believe they can reach it.
- Find your average order value (AOV). In Shopify Analytics, look at the last 60–90 days.
- Start 15–30% above it. If your AOV is $48, a goal around $55–$60 asks for roughly one more small item.
- Check the margin. The extra spend should at least cover your average shipping cost.
- Look at your price points. If most add-on products cost $15, a goal $5 above the AOV makes shoppers overshoot — that’s fine, and often good.
- Measure for 2–4 weeks. Compare AOV, conversion rate and the share of orders that reach the goal.
If almost nobody reaches the goal, it’s too high. If almost everyone already qualifies, it’s too low and isn’t raising order value.
Combine free shipping with a second reward
A single goal stops working once the shopper reaches it. A second tier gives them a reason to keep going:
- Tier 1: free shipping at $50
- Tier 2: a free gift at $75
This “reward ladder” works because the next goal appears as soon as the first one is reached. Read more in our guides to free gifts with purchase and tiered discounts.
Set up a free shipping bar with Kai
Kai Progress bar & Free Gift adds the bar and the automatic shipping discount together:
- Install Kai from the Shopify App Store and turn on its app embed in your theme.
- Create a campaign and choose a goal based on cart value or number of items.
- Add a free shipping tier — full free shipping or a percentage off shipping.
- Write the messages for before and after the goal, with the remaining amount filled in automatically.
- Pick placements: cart drawer, cart page, product page, header promo bar, announcement bar or sticky bar.
- Style it with a layout and template that match your theme, then publish.
The discount runs as a Shopify automatic discount, so shoppers don’t need a code. On the Pro plan you can also limit free shipping to selected shipping methods, such as standard shipping only.
Free shipping across countries and currencies
If you sell internationally with Shopify Markets, a $50 goal shown as a converted €46.37 looks odd. Kai converts goals with Shopify’s rates by default, and lets you set your own goal per market — €50 in Europe, £45 in the UK — or limit a campaign to selected markets. Messages can be translated into every language published in your store.
Common mistakes
- Showing the bar only in the cart. Shoppers decide what to add on product pages too.
- A static message. “Free shipping over $50” is weaker than “$12 to go.”
- Forgetting mobile. Check that the bar fits your theme’s mobile cart without pushing the checkout button down.
- A bar that doesn’t match checkout. If the bar and the discount are set up separately, they will eventually disagree.
Frequently asked questions
Does Shopify have a free shipping bar built in?
No. Shopify lets you create a free shipping discount with a minimum order amount, but it doesn't show shoppers how far they are from it. Some themes show a short message; for a live progress bar in the cart, you need a theme customization or an app.
What is a good free shipping threshold?
A common starting point is 15–30% above your current average order value, checked against your margin so the extra items cover the shipping cost. Test it for a few weeks and compare average order value and conversion rate before and after.
Can I give free shipping only on certain shipping methods?
Yes. With Kai's Pro plan you can limit free shipping to selected shipping methods — for example, free standard shipping while express shipping stays paid.
Does the free shipping bar work in different currencies?
In Kai, goals convert with Shopify's currency rates by default, or you can set your own goal per Shopify Market, such as €50 in Europe and $60 in the US.
